Hackers turn Google into vulnerability scanner

Hackers are actively exploiting an Internet Explorer plug-in that’s widely used by Facebook and MySpace members with a multi-attack kit, a security company warned Friday.

The exploit directed at Aurigma’s Image Uploader, an ActiveX control used by Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites to allow members to upload photos to their profiles, is just one of five in a new hacker toolkit being used by several Chinese attack sites, said Symantec Corp.

Attacks begin when users receive spam or an instant message with an embedded link, said Darren Kemp, the Symantec analyst who authored the advisory. The link takes users to…

Firefox 3.0’s memory consumption is “dramatically improved,” claimed Mozilla’s chief engineer, because developers have aggressively attacked the open-source browser’s notorious memory “leaks.”

“We’ve been working on memory [leaks] for years,” said Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla’s vice president of engineering. “But it really started to come together in the last six months.”

Another milestone, however, might have been three months ago, when a member of the Mozilla board of directors said attention had to be paid to Firefox’s memory allocation if the browser was going to compete in the RAM-tight mobile market.

No matter the reason or the timing, Mozilla claims progress on the memory…

The Web is Dangerous, Google Warns

The Web is scarier than most people realize, according to research published recently by Google.

The search engine giant trained its Web crawling software on billions of Web addresses over the past year looking for malicious pages that tried to attack their visitors. They found more than 3 million of them, meaning that about one in 1,000 Web pages is malicious, according to Neils Provos, a senior staff software engineer with Google.

These Web-based attacks, called “drive-by downloads” by security experts, have become much more common in recent years as firewalls and better security practices by Microsoft have made it harder for…
